Decision Time - The Name
Dear Diary,
Some decisions are easier than others.
One big thing on my to-do list was finding a name that would suit the little one. And of course, I had started an excel sheet already.
Though, there was one tiny problem. I had mainly focused on female names at that time. Remember blue female… With Isla leading the list. Certainly not an option for a male kitten.
Spoilt for Choice
This meant, back to the start.
I knew I wanted a rather traditional Scottish name. But again, endless options. Where to even begin?
To make things even more complicated, I got the whole family involved at that point. Everyone got so excited about my new flatmate and everyone wanted to contribute a name suggestion.
Hamish, Otis, Angus, Noah, Jack, Harris… I was drowning in names.
We even got to a point where we went through all Scottish Whisky distilleries. Lagavulin, Aberlour, Glenmorangie… I quite like Dalwhinnie - again female.
After a little more research and thinking time, I finally managed to condense the list down to six names: Jamie, Oscar, Elliot, Fraser, Lewis and Mackenzie. Aye, all proper Scottish!
However, six are still five too many.
So, I did a little poll with my friends. Again, didn’t lead to a clear winner. Probably, wouldn’t have listened to them anyway.
Let’s Sleep on it
Maybe I would wake up the next morning with THE name first thing coming to my mind. Worth a try.
I tried to picture the kitten in my head going through the names and hoping for this match made-in-heaven feeling to kick in for one of them.
Which one had the best sound? Which one gave me the right vibe?
A name is not something you can change. It is a once-in-a-lifetime decision to make. Even for a cat.
Until I realised…
Maybe I’ve decided on the winner already
I have to admit, I had a tendency towards Jamie quite early on.
And yes, maybe the Jamie Fraser (a bit cheeky, both of his names are on the list) from the series Outlander might have had a slight influence on me.
Still, I kept going through all of them over and over again. I wanted to make the right choice.
Maybe the way forward was to wait until I meet him and then the right name will pop up. But I rather have things sorted in advance.
The more I thought about it, the more Jamie manifested in my head and looking at him, it felt like a pretty good match.
There it was. Welcome, wee Jamie!
